An Atmore woman spent most of the week in Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola following an assault by two individuals on Union Street last Sunday.
According to a spokesperson for the Atmore Police Department, officers were called to the scene of the attack where Domonique Henderson, 22, had been assaulted. During the attack, the suspects used a weapon to strike Henderson several times, according to a press release. Henderson was transported to Atmore Community Hospital from the scene of the attack and later transported to Sacred Heart Hospital.
According to Henderson's sister, Latisha, the past week has been very difficult on the victim.
"She suffered a dislocated arm, stab wounds in her head, shoulder and back," Latisha Henderson said. "They punctured her lungs. She had to have a tube inside her and they just took the tube out last night (Thursday). She has staples in her head and stitches in the rest of her wounds. She has to go back in three weeks to make sure her arm won't re-dislocate. If her arm comes out of place again they'll have to do surgery."
The victim of the attack was feeling healthier Friday after the tubes had been removed.
"I'm feeling better now that I've got the chest tubes out," she said.
According to Sacred Heart Hospital personnel, Henderson was "listed in good condition" Friday afternoon, although her sister said things could have been a lot worse.
"They said the stab wounds are two inches away from her heart," Latisha Henderson said. "So, she almost died."
Latisha Henderson said that the assault occurred over her sister trying to break up a fight.
"It was over some mess that started with our cousins," she said. "She (Domonique) was trying to stop a fight."
The Atmore Police Department has arrested two suspects involved in the attack, Alexis French, 21, and a 16-year-old juvenile. According to the press release, both suspects are from Bay Minette. They were arrested and charged with first-degree assault.
The victim's sister feels that the charge of assault in first degree is injustice.
"We feel that instead of them being charged with first assault, they need to be charged with attempted murder and we're working on that," Latisha Henderson said.
Domonique Henderson, born on June 4, 1985, attended Escambia County High School. She graduated in 2003. She has a one-year-old son, Jovaughntai.
