The Escambia Academy Cougars reached the ultimate high in high school sports last Friday when they took down their rival, Sparta Academy, on Homecoming. This was a great night to be a Cougar, but now Cougars head coach Heath Gibson needs to corral his players and get them to focus on the next task at hand.
That task is taking down Evangel Christian Academy on Senior Night.
"We have to stay focused for this game," Gibson said. "This should be a good tuneup for our huge game against Wilcox the following week. We wanted to play this game on Thursday to get the excitement going around town."
The Evangel Christian Lions will run a spread offense at the Cougars and Gibson said EA needs to be ready mentally to shut them down.
"They have a really good wide receiver who can also play quarterback," Gibson said. "He has real good speed and he can make some plays for them."
The turnover ratio is what Gibson believes will be the key factor in the game.
"Physically we should be ready for this game," he said. "But to win the game we need to not commit turnovers."
The action will begin in Canoe before the game begins. Tomorrow night's contest will serve as Senior Night for the Cougar football and volleyball teams. The volleyball team has a match against Evangel at 4:30 p.m. and the Senior Night festivities will begin at 6:45 p.m.
"It will be a big night for the seniors," Gibson said. "This will be their last home game and we have a big night planned for them."
The 2007 football, cheerleading and volleyball seniors include, Tyler Harrison, Ethan Brooks, Anna-Lisa McGhee, Courtney Bruley, Clare Jones and Talerie Singleton.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Bachelor Field with Senior Night activities before the game at 6:45 p.m.
