The Escambia County Commission renewed an agreement Monday that will continue to provide transportation services for both the Agency on Aging and clients of the Southwest Alabama Mental Health agency.
"This is an annual contract for Escambia County Alabama Transit System to provide transportation for senior citizens," Commission chairman David Stokes said. "This will enable our senior citizens to get to the S.A.I.L. centers in the county."
The commission also agreed to renew the contract with ECATS to provide transportation to and from doctor's appointments and other areas to those clients served by the Southwest Alabama Mental Health agency.
"We are happy to continue these contracts to allow the citizens of this county to have transportation," Stokes said. "This is a valuable asset for many of our county's residents."
In other business Monday, the commission also discussed the closing of Cowpen Creek Road in the Canoe community.
"We have received a request from Escambia Academy concerning partial closure of the road," County Engineer Bill Bridges said. "It is a safety issue and officials there are only asking that the road be closed during school hours."
After discussion about detours and other limitations, the commission approved the closing of the road from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday during the school year.
