Andy Peck with Wycliffe Bible Translators will be speaking at First Baptist Church Atmore Oct. 30 about a world in which computers and Bible translation collides.
Peck has been with Wycliffe Bible Translators as computer programming manager for almost 20 years and has had many adventures throughout his time with the organization.
"Here I was, a city boy with an air-conditioned office, suddenly thrown into a jungle for 29 days," Peck said in a news release. "It was a humbling realization that I was not in control, but God was faithful."
Peck was part of a team that was sent to Peru to find a remote group of people. The hope was to translate the Bible into their language.
"I was selected to help the team make the journey from our main camp, on a tributary of the Amazon River, to a remote camp that had been established near the village," Peck said.
Peck said on the way a giant log had fallen across the river and blocked their path to the camp.
"I spent three days chopping away at the log, trying to clear the way," he said. "We had no choice but to camp out on the water's edge in old thatch huts until I finally chopped through the log."
Six months after the exhilarating journey, Peck discovered that the village was helping another village in translating the Bible.
During Peck's several years with Wycliffe Bible Translators he has trained many Bible translators in different computer software programs to help with their work.
Peck will speak at FBC about how computer technology plays a role in Bible translation.
