Don't get spooked this Halloween
This coming Wednesday, young ghouls and goblins will take to the streets throughout Atmore in search of the biggest candy haul.
For those who will participate, it is important to keep themselves safe.
It is not a night to let your guard down. There are people out there who might be up to trickery rather than treats.
To some, it may seem that no area is totally safe, which does not bode well for an occasion centered around children in costumes going door to door.
The American Red Cross recommends that trick-or-treaters be accompanied by an adult, take a flashlight, don't go into a stranger's home and don't walk in the street. Most importantly, an adult should inspect all goodies collected.
For those who will shop this weekend, safety is an integral part of choosing a costume. First of all, costumes should have the proper fit. Fire-retardant clothing also is important.
Light-colored clothing or reflective tape should be worn so it will be easier to be seen in the dark. Reflectors or reflective tape also is necessary for those riding bikes or skateboards.
Unfortunately, pranks are a part of Halloween. If something doesn't look right, it should be reported to authorities immediately.
Finally, if you do not wish for people to come to your door, turn off your exterior lighting. If you do welcome youngsters and have treats, then light up your home well.
