Tom Wolfe plans to spend New Year's Eve watching a gas gauge.
But he doesn't expect that to happen.
The city's gas system is served by two pipelines, one in the southwest part of town, another with a connection on Smith Dairy Road.
If both did go down for some reason, another line between here and Brewton could be used to pipe gas into Atmore.
Wolfe has had joint meetings with Conecuh-Monroe Gas District, the City of Flomaton and the City of Brewton to coordinate mutual aid in the event of pipeline failure.
The water supply is less of a problem.
A generator for the Trammell Street water plant came in Tuesday. This will provide additional support in case of a power outage. Wolfe said the generator was already in the plans and is not a concession to Y2K fears.
Unlike larger water systems, the Atmore system does not have any valves that are operated by computers.
Wolfe is confident his department will maintain the residents' needs.
