Merrill Still wore many hats.
He was a devoted husband for 52 years, a father of four, a successful business owner for the past 32 years and a friend to many.
So when news of his death began circulating throughout Atmore Friday afternoon, a majority of this small southern town mourned.
Still, owner of Atmore Ambulance since 1975 and Atmore Appliance, formerly Western Auto, since 1979, passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla. with his wife, Pat, at his bedside after becoming ill at home three weeks earlier. He was 71.
For those that knew Still, and there weren’t many who didn’t, it was hard to find a quality they didn’t like. Whether he was helping someone or spending quality time with his family and employees, he was always loving and caring. Even if you didn’t know him, he would come to your aid.
Benner said Still took pride in his businesses and was a hard worker. She said he was a born salesman.
Still was born and raised in McCullough on Still Farm Road where he lived all his life. He joined the Air Force in November of 1953 where he remained for 11 years before joining the Reserves. Following retirement from the Reserves, he joined the National Guard and also worked at International Paper where he also retired a few years after purchasing Western Auto. He also farmed and raised cattle.
Benner said the holidays have been tough on her family the past couple of years. Last year, Still’s son, Bryan, was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident on Dec. 2.
As for Still’s businesses, they will continue to operate as usual, according to Benner.
