Weather below 40 degrees is not a common thing in Atmore, but lately freezing temperatures have become more prominent making energy bills even more expensive than usual.
Gov. Bob Riley has issued a $7.4 million grant to make winter suffering a little easier on Alabama residents. The Community Action Agency of Baldwin, Escambia, Clarke, Monroe and Conecuh counties will see $402,344 of the $7.4 million pot.
Community Action Agency’s Escambia County coordinator Kathy Madden said the organization is still accepting Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) applications.
The grant is made possible through LIHEAP and is for helping eligible low-income households pay to keep their houses warm.
Individuals should bring to their appointment the social security numbers of each person in their household, proof of income for the previous month for each member in the household, the date of birth for each member in the household, their energy bill and a proof of utility allowance or check amount if living in Section 8 housing or public housing.
Madden said the program will end May 30.
