Maxine Sharpless Bell
FAIRHOPE - Maxine Sharpless Bell passed away on Feb. 5, 2008 at her home in Fairhope. Maxine was born in Walnut Hill, Fla. on Jan. 18, 1926 to John Castle and Lala Holley Sharpless. She grew up in Atmore and lived in Warner Robins, Ga. for most of her adult life, but lived in Fairhope for the past five years. She was a member of Daphne United Methodist Church and was a former member of the First United Methodist Church of Warner Robins, Ga.
She was a member and the past president of the Warner Robins Women’s Club, the Morning Garden Club and as well as a past officer of the Women’s Auxiliary (Alliance) to the Georgia Dental Association. Her love of flowers and art was only surpassed by the love she had for her family and friends.
Mrs. Bell is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Dr. Jack A. Bell Sr. of Fairhope; one son, Dr. J. Alex Bell (Sandy) of Warner Robins Ga.; one daughter, Pamela Bell Hunter (David) of Daphne; seven grandchildren, Cory-Bell Moore (Margaret), Jack A. Bell III and R. Miles Bell, all of Warner Robins, Ga., D. Ryland Hunter and Emma Maxine Hunter of Daphne, Leigh-Anne Hinter Polowy of South Riding, Va. and Laurel Hunter Wheeler (Todd) of Dumfries, Va.; two brothers, Roy C. Sharpless of San Francisco, Calif. and John E. Sharpless (Martha) of Fairhope; two sisters, Geraldine S. Findley (Floyd) of Fairhope and Ellafair S. Cotter of Foley. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Jewel Grace S. Godwin.
Visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008 at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Fairhope. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008 at Magnolia Park cemetery in Warner Robins, Ga.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donation be made to Covenant Hospice.
Arrangements were made by Wolf-Bayview Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc.
Alice J. Bryant
ATMORE - Ms. Alice J. Bryant, 71, of Atmore died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008 at her residence. She had been employed as a shop steward supervisor at Pollock Hospital in Jersey City, N.J. She was a graduate of Escambia County Training School in Atmore and Rutgers University in Jersey City. She was a member of Holy Community Center in Atmore.
Her parents, Andrew Nelson and Hester Nelson; one sister, Catherine Nelson and three brothers, Andrew Nelson, Charles Nelson and Jim Nelson, all preceded her in death.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories, two daughters, Angela (James) Walston and Constance Bryant of Jersey City, N.J.; one son, Thomas Nelson of Jersey City, N.J.; two sisters Ella Mae (Andrew) McCleese of Salisbury, Md., and Laura Gean Nelson of Atmore; three brothers, Curtis (Irene) Nelson, Eddie Lee (Barbara) Nelson and Willie Earl Nelson of Jersey City, N.J.; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008 at Holy Community Center in Atmore with Bishop Jimmy C. Wilson officiating. Interment followed in Fairview Cemetery.
Turner Funeral Chapel, LLC of Atmore directed the service.
Eugene Clemmons
PLAINFIELD, Ill. - Mr. Eugene Clemmons, 68, of Plainfield, Ill., formerly of Atmore died Sunday, Feb. 3 in Illinois. He was an independent truck driver and he was a 1956 graduate of Escambia County training school in Atmore.
His parents, Jessie Clemmons and Christine Clemmons preceded him in death.
He leaves to cherish his loving memories, one brother, Houston (Patricia) Clemmons of Fredericksburg, Va. and one sister Lucy (Frank) Moore of Plainfield, Ill.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008 at Mt. Shiloh Baptist Church in Nokomis with Dennis K. Stephens, Pastor and Elder Austin Kidd officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Shiloh Church Cemetery in Nokomis.
Turner Funeral Chapel, LLC was in charge of directing the services.
Willie Knight
Willie Knight was born to the late Geneva Tims and the late Leo Stallworth. He was born on June, 18, 1958. He departed this life on Jan. 30, 2008 at his residence.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Barbara Jean Knight; two daughters, Khalilah (Clarence) Boatwright and La Poucher Boatwright of Vancouver, Wash.; one son, Walter (Marion) Boatwright of Pensacola, Fla.; six brothers, Bobby Ray Knight of Detroit, Mich., Johnny Tims and Steve Tims of Pensacola, Fla., Robert Tims of Century, Fla. and Maurice Stallworth and Leon Stallworth of Dorchester, Mass.; one sister, Shirley Johnson of Century, Fla.; two god children, Wanda Knight and Meshea Allen; four aunts, Eartha Ree Watkins of Flomaton, Jeanette Maye of West Palm, Fla., Geraldine (Terry) Cousin of Atlanta and devoted aunt Sallie Cobb of Atmore; two uncles, Aubrey (Betty) Stallworth of Dorchester, Mass. and Willie Stallworth of Montgomery; eight grandchildren; god brother, Michael York; god sister, Shemecka Finklea and a host of nieces, cousins, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008 at Edward Point Christian Church in Century, Fla. with Pastor Lamar Randall officiating. Interment followed in Fairview cemetery.
Pallbearers were Michael York, David Gay, Alphonzia Peoples, Marcus Johnson, Sedric Lowery and Alfonzie Cottrell. Flower bearers were family and friends.
Christian Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.
Alfreda L. Martin Gulley
Mrs. Alfreda L. Martin Gulley was born to the late Willie “Sweet” Martin and the late Francis McNeil in Perdido on Feb. 21, 1950.
Her husband, Henry Gulley Sr.; one daughter, Francis D. Martin; two sisters, Jewell Lee McNeil and Anna Maye Martin and one brother, Eddie N. Martin, preceded her in death.
She leaves to cherish her memories, two daughters, Altheria D. Martin and Shanda (Tony) Williams of Atmore; three stepchildren, Fredrick Gulley Jr., Henry Gulley and Keisha Gulley of Bay Minette; two sisters, Ella L. Frye of Jersey City, N.J. and Willie Maye Wiggins of Cincinnati, Ohio; seven brothers, Willie (Rump) Martin of Letahatchee, Charles (Bishop Boy) Martin of Letahatchee, Lewis Martin of Cincinnati, Ohio, Willie J. (Dornell) Martin of Jersey City, N.J., John D. Martin of Atmore, Alfred L. (Sara) Martin of Jersey City, N.J. and Ray Charles (Mary Ann) Martin of Biloxi, Miss; six grandchildren, Mykeia Martin, Willie Staples Jr., Anjaneice Martin, Ashleigh Taylor, Damarcus Taylor and Brandon Cummings; 60 nieces and nephews, a host of friends and one special friend, Eddie Brown of Bay Minette.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008 at Morning Dove Baptist Church with the Rev. Stanley Cox officiating. Interment followed at Morning Dove Cemetery. Pallbearers and flower bearers were family and friends.
Christian Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of the services.
