At Escambia County Middle School, a group of concerned students is hoping that Bible verse holds true. President Matthew Baisden and other members of the ECMS Christian Club which he helped organize are attempting to make a difference not only in their school but also in their city, their state and beyond.
These are ambitious goals, for sure, but the club is optimistic that change will come through prayer and fellowship. Their quest is off to a good start. Close to 70 students have signed up for the club, which plans to meet once a month and bring in special speakers to share their testimony.
We salute these students and the vision they have for their community. We also salute their teachers and their principal, Herbert Payne, for rising above the controversy surrounding religion in schools and finding a way to make these students' dream a reality. School officials apparently followed state guidelines to a T, contacting an outside individual to sponsor the club. The Rev. Willie Williams of Jones St. Holiness Church graciously agreed to help and has already met with club officers.
With so many negative items about school violence in the national news today, it's refreshing and uplifting to see a group which is so obviously excited by the prospect of spreading good will while sharing their faith with their classmates.
Indeed, there is reason to keep the faith in this generation.
