When Martin Gehman heard the buzzer going off at his shop, Marty’s Discount &Wholesale Furniture, he was shocked when instead of finding a door propped open he found a hole through the wall where a car had crashed into the building.
According to Gehman, the alarm sounded around 2 a.m. last Saturday at the Howard Street furniture store. Gehman said he lives close enough to the store that the buzzer woke him up.
Gehman approached the building and checked to make sure each door was closed when he saw the large hole in the front of the store where a vehicle drove through a window and then vacated the premises.
As of Friday morning the Atmore Police Department had no leads on who ran into the furniture store, according to Gehman.
Also something that could help the police are some broken pieces of the vehicle, including a front headlight and a portion of a John Deere license plate, Gehman said.
Gehman has already started working on putting Marty’s back in working order.
Gehman said a dining room suit along with a few other items were damaged because of the drive-by crash.
Gehman said anybody with information about the hit-and-run should either contact him at 368-3353 or the Atmore Police Department at 368-9141.
