Participants in the Youth Police Academy No. 8 will learn a plethora of things about law enforcement and the criminal justice system during the upcoming week’s event.
Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, Brewton Police Department and Jefferson Davis Community College will serve as sponsors and Atmore, Flomaton and East Brewton police departments will serve as co-sponsors for the Youth Police Academy No. 8 (YPA), which will begin tomorrow and end Friday.
Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputy sheriff and YPA director Clair Sanborn said there are more participants this year than ever.
The participants of YPA will receive a visit from the Naval Air Station Whiting Field’s security wing and also Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) team from Pensacola, Fla. tomorrow. There will also be a Spanish class for law enforcement officers and as well as physical training.
YPA will be in Atmore Tuesday for firearms training and a physical agility course. The group will go back to Brewton Tuesday afternoon for traffic stops and building searches.
The remainder of the week will involve defensive tactics, Internet safety from predators, a lesson on forensics investigations from the Department of Forensic Sciences of Mobile. There will also be a class from E-911.
Graduation will be held Friday evening at 6 p.m.
Sanborn said besides the above mentioned sponsors and co-sponsors, officers from Florida’s Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, Alabama Department of Public Safety, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, ABC, Poarch Police Department, Conecuh County Sheriff’s Office and many more have given their time for the Academy.
