Its bright green paint scheme is hard to miss and its 36 cheerful tunes attract children each weekend as it zigzags the streets of Atmore.
At first sight, eager children refer to the 1972 Chevrolet P20 truck as the “Ice Cream Man,” but upon closer inspection they realize it’s the “Ice Cream Lady.”
Lifelong Atmore residents Carolyn Brown and her husband, David, began Fun Times Ice Cream in April and have been serving the children and adults of Atmore frozen treats ever since. Carolyn, who runs the ice cream truck, said the community has supported her endeavor.
Carolyn said the reason they decided to start running the ice cream truck in Atmore was because they were offered such a good deal on purchasing the truck, freezers and stock, which they bought from David’s cousin.
Carolyn said she runs the ice cream truck every weekend weather permitting. She added that she is only able to run about three hours each Saturday and Sunday if the temperature is too hot.
The Fun Times Ice Cream truck’s cold plate freezer holds 30-40 different frozen treats including ice cream, Popsicles and frozen fruit. The truck also carries soft drinks, chips, candy, pickles, pickled eggs and pickled pigs feet.
Brown also said Dora the Explorer, Spiderman, Bugs Bunny and Bloo are “cool” items with the children. She also said she sales a lot of snow-cones, Bomb Pops and frozen fruit.
Both Carolyn and David said running the ice cream truck always brightens their day.
Carolyn said she has made numerous friends while running her route.
She added that the couple promotes a healthy and safe environment.
The Browns have also made their endeavor a family affair. Besides David assisting Carolyn in driving some weekends, their granddaughters, Katie and Mia Martinez also ride along and assist in serving the eager children.
For those customers that want the truck to themselves, Carolyn has accommodated them.
When the temperatures begin cooling down in Atmore, the Browns will start offering treats that will help keep their customers warm.
