Smart Links slated to begin Sept. 8
Smart Links will begin at 3 p.m. on Sept. 8 at Escambia County Middle School for students in grades K-8. Homework assistance, academic enrichment, community service projects and nutritious snacks will be provided.
Applications are available at the Atmore central office, ECMS, A.C. Moore and Rachel Patterson. For more information call Gloria Fowler at 368-0306 or Marcia Adams at 368-9105. The program will continue through Nov. 21. Registration is $25 per child.
Trinity youth praise, worship service
Trinity Episcopal Church will host a Contemporary Praise &Worship Service for youth at 6 p.m. on Sept. 7. The service is open to all youth, regardless of denomination.
The Rev. H. Michael Hill, Rector at St. Cyprians Episcopal Church in Pensacola, Fla. will present the evening message. A group of youths from St. Monica’s Episcopal Church in Cantonment, Fla. will provide musical accompaniment.
Area meetings
Girl Scouts sign up, meeting Sept. 4
Girl Scouts are registering for 2008-09 year. We will accept girls from 3rd to 5th grade for our junior level troop. We meet on Thursday nights at leader Erin Branch’s house from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
Cost will be $60. This includes sash with insignia patches, handbook, badge book and registration. Fundraisers are held to fund projects during the year. First meeting will be Thursday, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m.

Prevention coalition to meet Sept. 12
The Southwest Alabama AIDS Prevention Coalition will not meet in August. The next meeting will be on Sept. 12.

Education Retirees meeting Sept. 11
The first meeting of the Escambia County Education Retirees Association for the 2008-09 unit year will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11 at the W.S. Neal High School Library in East Brewton.
All education retirees (academic and support professionals) on any academic level, anyone receiving a check from the Retirement Systems of Alabama, and persons interested in public education are invited to attend this meeting. Updates on COLA’S, health insurance and basic retiree information will be given.

Wee Ones Program begins Sept. 4
The Atmore Public Library will be starting the Wee Ones Program on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 10 a.m. Wee Ones follows the school year calendar.
Friendship luncheon Sept. 11 at Pintoli’s
McCullough Friendship luncheon will be held at 11 a.m. on Sept. 11 at Pintoli’s Restaurant. The luncheon will be held in the private dining room.
Use the back for parking, especially for our members using walkers. Make plans to attend and bring a friend.
Atmore Community Hospital will host “Dinner with the Doc,” focusing on joint pain causes and treatments.
Dr. William Smith, orthopedic physician, will help you “Get Back in Motion” with his presentation on the causes and treatments for joint pain at the Sept. 23 event.
The free presentation features dinner at 5:30 p.m. followed by the educational program.
Because seating is limited, registration is required. The session will be held in the hospital’s Mayson Auditorium.

The Northview High School Quarterback Club has rescheduled its "Meet the Chiefs" night to 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 4. Hot dog and drink combos will be on sale for $3.

Hospitality House porch sale Sept. 5-6
The Hospitality House, located at 1106 E. Church St., will host a porch sale from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5 and Saturday, Sept. 6.
Some of the items being sold are comforters, bread machine, secretary chair, two chandeliers and a large mirror with medicine cabinet.

YLA application deadline Friday
Applications for Youth Leadership Atmore for the 2008-09 year are now available for high school juniors interested in participating in the program. The applications are on hand at each high school office and the Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce office.
Programs throughout the year start with an opening retreat at Camp Beckwith on Weeks Bay and include law enforcement and justice, resumes interviews and etiquette, history, education, government and business and industry. Membership in YLA is limited to approximately 20 students.
Candidates must be in their junior year of High School, be maintaining a cumulative GPA of 2.5 of higher, and have parental and school permission to participate. The deadline for completed applications is Friday, Sept. 5, at 4 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce office.
Taste of the South looking for vendors
Taste of the South will be held on Sept. 20 from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. at Heritage Park in Atmore. The event is coordinated by the Leadership Atmore Class of 2004. Tickets will be $10. The $10 ticket will allow individuals to receive five “taste testing” tickets, allowing them to try some wonderful dishes.
If anyone is interested in having a vending booth at this event, contact the Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce. There will be live entertainment provided by local talents.
Walk-A-Thon Oct. 11 at Tom Byrne Park
The Women of Distinction will be sponsoring their inaugural Walk-A-Thon, themed “A Walk in the Park,” on Saturday, Oct. 11.
The Walk-A-Thon will be held at Tom Byrne Park and is slated to begin at 8 a.m. with a 7 a.m. until 7:30 a.m. late registration.
Proceeds from this walk will benefit the American Cancer Society Loan Closet at Greenlawn Home Health and to support other educational and civic events in the community.

McCullough VFD yard sale Sept. 6-7
The McCullough Volunteer Fire Department will be holding a fundraiser yard sale on Sept. 6-7 starting at 8 a.m. until. All proceeds from sale will be used solely for the benefit of the fire department. Refreshments will also be for sale. Money donations and donations of items will be greatly appreciated.

Calvery Deliverance gospel singing
Calvery Deliverance Temple in McDavid, Fla. will host a gospel singing at 7 p.m. on Sept. 20 featuring the Maharreys.

Gospel Light Church to host concert
The Sandspur Band will perform at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 14 at at Gospel Light Church.
The Sandspur Band is a nurturing ministry of Gulf Shores United Methodist Church. The band takes gospel music into the homes of shut-ins as well as nursing homes and assisted living facilities. They have also performed for numerous church and community functions.
Beginning in 2002, with three musicians, the band quickly grew to its current membership of six. Members include, Mel Middlebrooks (guitar), Susie Davis (vocals), George Hasenbein (autoharp), James Keith Posey (upright bass &mandolin), Larry Davis (harmonica) and Clarence Bauer (banjolele).
Harmonizing vocally is something that all the band members enjoy, while playing what they like to call “Stained Glass Bluegrass” music. The band has been truly blessed in their ministry and hope they will continue to be a blessing to others.

Jitterbug classes offered at JDCC
Jitterbug (aka single step) classes will begin Thursday, Sept. 25 and end Thursday, Oct. 30 from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the JDCC Brewton campus in the Neal auditorium. The cost is $50 per person.

Learn upholstery basics at JDCC
Upholstery Basics Class will be held Tuesday, Sept. 7 from Tuesday, Sept. 16 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the JDCC Campus in Atmore in the Paint and Body Classroom, cost is $65 per person and the Instructor will be Roger Harrelson.
