Five statewide Republican candidates will be in Atmore Wednesday as they make their way through a 67-county, statewide political tour. The candidates will be in Escambia County today with stops at the Courthouse in Brewton at 1 p.m., Flomaton City Hall at 2:30 p.m. and Atmore City Hall at 3:15 p.m.
State Representative Alan Baker of Brewton said this program is important for the community to familiarize themselves with upcoming candidates.
The public is encouraged to attend and meet with the candidates. The statewide candidates will include Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh, candidate for Public Service Commission President; Judge Greg Shaw, candidate for Alabama Supreme Court (Place 1); Mary Windom, Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals (Place 2); Judge Bill Thompson, seated candidate for Alabama Court of Civil Appeals (Place 1) and Beth Kellum, Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals (Place 1).
Cavanaugh was previously a senior advisor to Gov. Bob Riley and a member of his cabinet. She was the first woman selected to serve as Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party and served in that position from 2005 - 07.
Shaw is originally from Birmingham and was appointed last year as Chief Judge of the Alabama Court of the Judiciary by the Alabama Supreme Court. He presently serves on the Advisory Committee on Criminal Procedure and the Chief Justice’s Commission on Professionalism, among others.
Windom is originally from Bay Minette and is currently the deputy General Attorney. She has also served as an assistant U.S. Attorney in the southern district of Alabama.
Thompson grew up in Elmore and Autauga counties and was elected to the Court of Civil Appeals from Homewood in 1996. He was re-elected to the court in 2002, and became the court’s presiding judge in 2007.
Kellum grew up in Tuscaloosa County and now serves as Secretary of the Montgomery County Republican Executive Committee. She has previously served two terms as president of the Capital City Republican Women organization.
