The Blue Devils of Escambia County earned a 25-20 victory Friday night over their rival the Baldwin County Tigers.
Escambia County (1-4, 0-3) has been searching all season long for a win and secured a big one in Bay Minette.
Head coach Kyle Davis said winning this game was like a heavy weight lifted off his team’s shoulders.
He added that he was proud of everyone that was a part of the winning effort.
The Blue Devils were led by sophomore quarterback Rico Stallworth, who put up more than 200 yards of total offense in the game.
Stallworth had 14 carries for 133 yards including a 30-yard scramble to the end zone. He also went 5-of-8 passing for 69 yards with an interception.
At halftime the game was close with Bay Minette up 14-13.
Davis said that at halftime he just told his team to keep their heads up.
During the third quarter, it looked as if Baldwin County might get the best of the Blue Devils, but when the fourth quarter started the defense found some life.
Forcing the Tigers into a three and out, the Blue Devils sat back and watched the Baldwin County kicker miss a field goal with the score 20-19.
The Blue Devils marched down the field and senior running back Michael Thomas found Kingston Craft in the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown pass, that put the Blue Devils on top 25-20.
Each team would get chances to score again, but the Tigers could not find the end zone and the Blue Devils could not capitalize on their lead.
As time ran out, sophomore defensive end Nate Davis sacked the Tigers’ quarterback for a 28-yard loss and with the clock expiring the quarterback was chased around and finally brought down again.
Baldwin County head coach David Wofford said his team was outplayed and out coached for four quarters.
Davis agreed with Wofford and said that both teams battled back and forth for the win.
Next up for the Blue Devils is a trip to region opponent LeFlore High school.
